Phase 1 is the foundation: the device, the documentation, the daily email. We are working on two things for later releases:
Handoff Smart — a subscription tier for teams who want a team dashboard, multi-patient management, and shared reporting across cases. Details not yet set. If this is relevant to your practice, reach out to bahagharilabs@gmail.com and we'll be in touch.
Handoff Rental — for short-duration cases or families who want a trial period before committing. Details coming. Contact bahagharilabs@gmail.com to learn more.
No. There is no subscription required for core features. The care log, family email, weekly CSV export, and all clinical features are included with the device and work without any ongoing payment. A Smart tier subscription is planned for a future phase — it will be optional and will cover multi-patient and team-level features. Contact bahagharilabs@gmail.com for current pricing.
The care record lives on the device. If the device is damaged or fails, the record on the device is not recoverable without a current backup. This is an important limitation to understand before ordering.
To protect the record: the weekly CSV export, which is emailed automatically every Sunday, serves as a running data backup. If you export every week, you will never lose more than one week of records in the event of a hardware failure.
We are building an admin-controlled manual backup export for a future update. For now, the Sunday CSV is your backup. Save it.
Handoff is designed with a local-first, privacy-protective architecture. The care record lives on the device in the patient's home, not on a cloud server. The vendor (us) never has access to the patient's care record. The only data that leaves the device is the family summary email and the weekly CSV export — both sent to addresses the admin controls.
Whether your specific home care practice is subject to HIPAA, and whether Handoff satisfies your obligations under HIPAA, depends on your practice type and structure. Independent nurses who are not covered entities under HIPAA are not subject to its requirements in the same way that hospitals or agencies are. We strongly recommend consulting a compliance advisor if you have questions about your specific situation.
What we can say: Handoff is substantially more defensible than a shared Google spreadsheet sent over group text.
This is a real and fair concern. The most effective approach is to raise it before care begins, when expectations are being set. Most independent nurses we have spoken with welcome the documentation — it protects them as much as it informs the family.
A few things that help: frame it as "I want to make sure we have a complete record for everyone's protection" rather than "I want to monitor the nurse." Show the nurse the For Nurses page of this site. Offer to order it and set it up yourself — ask them to simply log care the way they would in any clinical setting.
If a nurse refuses to document on any system, that is a professional conversation worth having separately.
Not in Phase 1. Each device manages one care environment. If you are an independent nurse managing more than one patient household, you would need a device per home. The Smart tier (coming later) is designed for multi-patient practice management.
The device requires home WiFi to set up and for family members to connect from their phones. Once set up, caregivers log care on the home WiFi — so the WiFi is the local network they connect to. The device does not require an internet connection to document care. Internet is only required to send the daily email and weekly CSV export. If the internet is out, care logging continues normally and the email queues to send when connectivity is restored.
Any modern smartphone — iPhone or Android — with a current browser (Safari, Chrome, or Firefox). There is no app to download. If you can open a website on your phone, you can use Handoff.
We offer a 30-day return window if the device is unused and in original condition. If you've set up the device and documented care and then decide it's not right for your situation, contact us and we'll work with you.
